Lemur varius, are strepsirrhine primates and the largest extant lemurs within the family Lemuridae. Like all living lemurs, they are found only on the island of Madagascar. Formerly considered to be a monotypic genus, two species are now recognized: the black-and-white ruffed lemur, with its three subspecies, and the red ruffed lemur.

Ruffed lemurs are diurnal and arboreal primates of the clade Strepsirrhini. They leap through the upper canopy of the rainforests in eastern Madagascar. They ar very sensitive to habitat disturbances. They build nests in trees and are the largest of the typical lemurs, generally growing 1.2 meters. They had been considered to come in several subspecies, red, green and grey, although recently the grey and red have been given complete species categorization, a decision supported by genetics. They live largely on fruit, more so than other lemurs, and are communal. They are considered critically endangered and relegated to a small segment of usable forest, which is dwindling in the face of selective logging and slash and burning farming.

The coin itself is 0.925 Silver fineness with a denomination of 20 Ariary from Madagascar. It weighs 19.44 grams, a little small for the series, with a diameter of 36 mm in proof mintage of 25,000.
